The plot thickens at
this point. After the servants, who had
been sent anonymously by Jesus, take the water sample to the person in charge
of the banquet, they stand by mischievously as he takes a sip. I don't know what kind of reaction they
anticipated. There must have been some
sort of positive response, since the text says that the banquet planner did not
know where the wine came from. It's
almost humorous to read the text add the words, "but the servants knew
where it came from." They knew
Jesus is the one who sent the sample of well water that now it has been
transformed into wine.
What do the servants
do when they realize something special has happened? How do they hide the fact that the wine was
just plain water a few seconds prior? Do
they laugh inside at the sight they are beholding? Do they mask their amazement? They obviously do not let the wine taster
know-- he is clueless. That side of the
story will play out later. All we know
at this point is that he calls for the groom.
That must have been more than a bit nerve-wracking for the groom. But what about the servants? Do they truly understand what just
happened?
They obviously know
something happened to the water, since the banquet master does not react with
disgust or dismay when he tastes the sample.
The taster's facial expression must have betrayed his surprise. An out of the ordinary event has just taken
place. They do not know how or exactly
what, they just know that Jesus has something to do with it. As the events develop, they simply stand by
and soak it all in. They must have been
dying to "spill the beans" and tell everyone what happened. The fact is, if nothing other than the fact
that there is wine where there was none a few minutes before, it would have
been a miracle worthy of retelling. But
they are in for more amazement before the evening is done. Just when you think God has intervened and
done something special, sometimes He comes through with a
"bonus." He is that kind of
God. He is amazing. We should expect amazing things more often.
